Problem

Government information in the Philippines is often scattered across multiple channels — official websites, social media, and physical offices. The BetterGovPH movement was founded on the belief that government should be transparent, efficient, and accessible to every citizen. As a contributor to this movement, I saw an opportunity to bring that vision to my hometown and to help other developers do the same.

Role

Builder & Maintainer

  • Built betterlaspinas.org from the ground up for Las Piñas City
  • Built and maintains lgu.bettergov.ph — the national BetterLGU directory
  • Actively maintains both projects post-launch
  • Contributed to the broader BetterGovPH open source community

What Was Built

betterlaspinas.org — A digital transparency portal for Las Piñas City, Metro Manila. Residents can access government services (certificates, business permits), city statistics, elected officials, emergency hotlines, and contact information in one place.

lgu.bettergov.ph — A national community-maintained directory of Better LGU transparency portals across the Philippines. Developers and civic contributors can find existing portals, register new ones, access starter templates, and collaborate — all open source.

Challenges

Sustained Maintenance Civic tech projects are easy to start and hard to keep alive. Both projects are actively maintained — content kept current, issues addressed, and community contributions reviewed — on a volunteer basis.

Community Coordination The BetterLGU directory spans 30+ LGU entries contributed by developers across the country. Managing contributions, maintaining consistency, and onboarding new contributors required clear documentation and open source governance.
